Oak end grain sideboards

Pair of matching oak sideboards + floating shelves, commissioned to fit perfectly into the alcoves either side of a fireplace.
The cabinets are constructed from solid oak, with mitred corners so the grain wraps continuously around the sides. The doors make a feature of oak’s end grain, with cross-sections of veneer taken perpendicular to the direction of the trunk to expose the tree’s annual growth rings. This veneer I made myself in house - slicing up a big chunk of air dried oak into 1.2mm thick slices. These were subsequently trimmed to size and laid up to create the pattern, before being vacuum pressed onto the doors.

Supporting the cabinets just above the height of the skirting boards are oak dowelled leg frames, jointed with wedged tenons and sitting on brushed brass feet (courtesy of Hallett Metalworks)
